Another Victim of Dispensationalism

Marie Exley of Colorado Springs is convinced that Armageddon, the end of the world as written of in the Bible, will come next year.

Her conviction is so strong that, though unemployed, she’s paid $1,200 to buy
advertising space on 10 Springs bus benches through October to get the word out. The ad says, “Save the Date! Return of Christ: May 21, 2011

http://www.gazette.com/articles/unemployed-102074-springs-funded.html

As sad as this story is, Marie Exley is not alone. Millions get handed down the ever changing prophecy updates that never come to pass.

Another Look At History

A few years ago (Mar. 2008), a friend of mine (Mike Loomis) pointed some very interesting things out.

He was listening to the audio version of "War of the Jews" by Josephus.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephus

It appears that Josephus was witnessing the book of Revelation being fulfilled.

=====================================

1. Revelation 16:18, "And there were noises and THUNDERINGS and LIGHTNINGS; and there was a great EARTHQUAKE, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth."

Josephus, "Wars of the Jews." Book 4 Chapter 4 paragraph 5

"for there broke out a prodigious storm in the night, with the utmost violence, and very strong winds, with the largest showers of rain, with continued LIGHTNINGS, terrible THUNDERINGS, and amazing concussions and bellowings of the earth, that was in an EARTHQUAKE. These things were a manifest indication that some destruction was coming upon men, when the system of the world was put into this disorder; and any one would guess that these wonders foreshowed some grand calamities that were coming"

=======================================

2. Revelation 16:19 Now the great city(Rev. 11:8) was DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was REMEMBERED BEFORE GOD, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath."

Josephus "Wars of the Jews" Book 5 Chapter 1 Paragraph 1

"it so happened that the sedition at JERUSALEM was revived, and PARTED INTO THREE FACTIONS, and that one faction fought against the other; which partition in such evil cases may be said to be a good thing, and the EFFECT OF DIVINE JUSTICE."

=======================================

3. Revelation 16:21 "And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the WEIGHT OF A TALENT."

Josephus, "Wars of the Jews." Book 5 Chapter 6 Paragraph 3

"Now the stones that were cast were of the WEIGHT OF A TALENT, and were carried two furlongs and further. The blow they gave was no way to be sustained, not only by those that stood first in the way, but by those that were beyond them for a great space. As for the Jews, they at first watched the coming of the stone, for it was of A WHITE COLOR, and could therefore not only be perceived by the great noise it made, but could be seen also before it came by its brightness;"

=======================================

Did Those Things Happen... READ HISTORY!

Let's now take a look at some of the things Jesus said and compare them with history.

Jesus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. And He said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down." (Matt 24: 1-2)

Did this event happen yet? The answer I believe is YES! It's well known that the temple Jesus was referring to here was destroyed in 70 AD.

http://http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Jerusalem_(70)

I think an important question that we have to ask ourselves is: Where is the third temple in scripture?

From what I've studied, I don't see a third temple.

As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" And Jesus answered and said to them, "See to it that no one misleads you. "For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many. (Matt 24: 3-5)

Jesus here begins to answer their questions. So did they witness the things Jesus said they would? Certainly the words He spoke to them meant something.

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. ( 1 John 2:18).

and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. (1 John 4:1).

For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. (2 John 1:7).

"You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. "But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs. "Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. "At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another "Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. "Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold. "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. (Matt 24: 6-13).

Did nation rise against nation? Were there famines and earthquakes? Were they delivered to tribulation and killed? Did many fall away and betray one another?

History has recorded many things, but for time sake I will not post those things now. Read the link above, there is good info there. Let's again look at scripture and see if we can find any clues there.

Acts 16: 26 records a "great earthquake". You can also study history and read about other earthquakes that took place during that time.

"Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers could find no food. (Acts 7:11).

One of them named Agabus stood up and began to indicate by the Spirit that there would certainly be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius. (Acts 11:28).

Were they killed, did they go through tribulation?

Read the following passages:

Acts 4:1-24
Acts 5: 17-42
Acts 6:9 - 8:5
Acts 12: 1-17
1 Peter 1:6-7
1 Peter 4:7 -5:11
Rev 1: 9-10
Rev 2: 8-13
1 Thess 3: 2-9

There are many more passages available, read the new testament!

More to come soon... not soon as defined by some (soon = 2000+ years :-).

This Generation?

Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ~ Jesus (Matt 24:34).

There is little doubt that most Christians today believe Jesus will return in "this generation". Somewhere in the world, a message about Jesus coming back in this generation is surely being preached.

Many generations have passed since Jesus made that statement to his apostles (read Matt 24 for context). Even a quick read of the New Testament would lead you to believe, those closest to Jesus' original statement thought He'd return in their generation. Let's take a look at some quotes from the writers of the New Testament.

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains (James 5:7).

You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. (James 5:8).

The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer (1 Peter 4:7).

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat (2 Peter 3:11-12).

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour (1 John 2:18).

Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming (1 John 2:28).

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near (Rev. 1:3).

And he said to me, "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near (Rev. 22:10).

FOR YET IN A VERY LITTLE WHILE, HE WHO IS COMING WILL COME, AND WILL NOT DELAY. (Heb. 10:37).

Before we move ahead, I'd like to ponder a few things, a few questions I think are important.

1. Were they wrong?

You think about that for yourself, but if you believe Jesus will return in our generation, then the obvious answer is yes. Before you start trying to make excuses, seriously think about it.

2. Did they simply misunderstand what Jesus said?

If Jesus didn't return in that generation, wouldn't the obvious answer to this question be YES? Again, before you start making excuses, think about the statements they made.

3. What else did they misunderstand or get wrong?

As you consider these things (without trying to shove anything into your paradigm), remember what Jesus Himself said:

And He said, "See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not go after them (Luke 21:8).

Clearly the writers of the New Testament were saying "the time is near". But, most today are saying the time wasn't near. So, if the time wasn't near, should we follow the teachings of the New Testament? Again, they (N.T. writers) said the time was near and most today say it wasn't; Jesus said if they say "the time is near" (and it's not), no not go after them; in other words, do not follow them.

Next time we'll look at a couple of things Jesus said.

Taxing The Wealthy To Pay For Health Care Part 2

This is a short story, with fictional characters that represent the bigger picture.

The Characters:

Rich Oldfart - Has done well for himself. He's wealthy, he pays his taxes and likes to spend money. But he also supports a couple of local charities. Rich Oldfart, after years of life experience, realizes nothing is for free.

Doofus Bozo - A lot of his peers call him Michael Moore, because he (like the real Michael Moore) is waiting around for the President to perform his next "super hero move". Doofus Bozo can't wait for health care to be free. He also likes the idea of his rich boss having to pay for it. He works with Barb Buyer, a nice young lady.

Barb Buyer - Is a nice young lady who works hard and likes her job at Mid-Size retail. She doesn't make a whole lot of money, but she makes it go a long way. She (like Doofus Bozo), likes the idea of free health care, but doesn't think it's fair that other people because they have money should be forced to pay for it.

Sally Supplier - Is always dressed nice, she's sharp and knows what she wants in life. Sally Supplier loves her job at Big Biz and does well at moving product. Sally Supplier doesn't pay much attention to politics and enjoys her hobbies and traveling.

It's now late August; earlier in the year, the much anticipated FREE Health Care bill was passed. Doofus Bozo was absolutely euphoric. Finally, the rich are going to pay and he'll have access to FREE Health care.

The first week of September rolls around and Sally Supplier calls Barb Buyer to make sure she'll be placing her big order for this up and coming holiday season. Barb Buyer explains that she has been told by the Boss Man to hold off because Rich Oldfart hasn't placed his order yet. "Strange" Sally supplier says, "Isn't Rich Oldfart one of your biggest customers"? Barb Buyer tells Sally Supplier that she ran into Rich Oldfart, and that he's had to do some cutting back because he was hit with a huge tax increase this year. Sally Supplier says, "OK, I'm nervous, if you guys need anything, let me know". "Of course" says Barb buyer.

Later that week, Doofus Bozo and Barb Buyer were called into a company meeting. Boss Man went over the financials for Mid-Size retail. Boss Man explained that while the company was still strong financially, they (because sales had dipped) were going to have to hold off on raises and bonuses for the year. Doofus Bozo couldn't believe it, Boss Man just bought a new car a week earlier; "how come he buys a new car and we don't get a bonus or raises this year? I count on that bonus every year to buy my kids Christmas gifts." Barb Buyer responds, "well at least we don't have to worry about health insurance cost anymore".

It's the first part of November now and Sally Supplier learns that Mid-Size retail can only place a small order this years. Sally Supplier while on the phone with Barb Buyer explains that business has really slowed down. Big Biz has done several staff reductions and Sally Supplier is worried she could be next. "Can't you call Rich Oldfart and get an order out of him" asked Sally Supplier. "Unfortunately no", says Barb Buyer. "Rich Oldfart is doing something different this year because of the taxes he's been hit with".

Late November, Doofus Bozo was at work day dreaming about the next "super hero move" of the president. He suddenly was called into Boss Man's office. Boss Man explains to Doofus Bozo, that while he appreciates everything Doofus Bozo has done for the company, sales have been down and Doofus Bozo has to be laid off.

Doofus Bozo can't believe it. He thought that when he voted for a young history making president, everything was going to be taken care of for him. He wasn't going to have to worry about gas or his mortgage anymore.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI

Eventually Rich Oldfart ran out of money and the President made everything fair. But there were no more Rich Oldfarts to tax and good health care wasn't even available anymore. So the President looked over seas (as he often does) to model what other countries do and started rationing health care.
